The general rule is that a microfilmed book is in the custody of and serviced by the same section or reading room that would have custody and service. "Microform" is a general term used to describe the microfilm, microfiche, or microprints (micro-opaque) used for the storage of documents that have been photographed and reduced in size in order to conserve space or to preserve materials that deteriorate rapidly.
Microform images are commonly reduced to about one twenty-fifth of the original document size. For special purposes, greater optical reductions may be used.
